The Circle of Life: Traditions of birth, wedding and death in Lithuania
The circle of life is similar for everyone: we are born, live, create and work, some of us create our own families, and at the end of our lives we inevitably leave this world.
Since ancient times people have celebrated the most important events in life in a special way: welcoming a child, entering family life, saying goodbye to a loved one – all these events were marked by rituals and customs to easen the transition.
We'll talk about:
- how a baby used to be welcomed into the world from the oldest times and what impact did religion have to it?
- wedding traditions – what rituals or actions would be done at home and what was left for the church: a meeting or a clash of cultures?
- the meaning of death in the past and present, the traditions of saying farewell and burial.
